Simi Mahtani is a New York City based BIPOC visual artist and community curator. Her sculptural paintings explore the use of discarded and found objects and seek to transform them using the mediums of papier-maché and plaster. Mahtani celebrates what others deem garbage, visually altering these objects and materials to elevate them and reclaim their importance.
While fragile and even fleeting, Papier-mache is an ancient, extensively explored medium. Building on this tradition, Mahtani evolves expectations of its temporality by constructing with vibrant pigments and archival layering techniques. Her sculptural materialization of recycled paper matter is note worthy in an increasingly digital age and counters the pressures that newly produced paper products inflict on the environment.
